Hello! My name is Sam Mostow. I am a junior at Virginia Tech studying multimedia journalism minors in political science and music.
For the past three years, I have written articles on the sports staff of The Collegiate Times, the student newspaper at Virginia Tech, and worked my way up to a sports editor position. In that role, I manage a staff of writers and edit their work, while covering Virginia Tech football, men's basketball and women's basketball for the outlet. In my role, I have traveled to cover ACC basketball tournaments, the 2023 Military Bowl and the Ally Tipoff, writing and publishing articles on deadline.
From there, I began working for Tech Sideline, the premier outlet covering Virginia Tech athletics. I have written news and features articles about various Olympic sports at Virginia Tech, including softball and soccer, which were shared with Tech Sideline's vast base of subscribers.
I spent summer 2023 working as an intern for The Falls Church News-Press, a small, independent newspaper in my hometown. I wrote local news, features and opinion articles, including a four-part series titled "The Future of Newspapers," which examined how print media has evolved over time.
The following summer, I worked as a newsroom intern at The Roanoke Times. There, I wrote daily news and sports content on deadline for over 20,000 paid subscribers. I penned articles every day, covering politics, town hall meetings, high school sports and local interest topics. Additionally, I helped compile the All-Timesland teams, recognizing excellence in high school athletes from the area.
In this portfolio, you will find various written works that I have published, as well as photography, video and layout design that I have completed as classwork. Thank you for looking at it.
